Estadio Tecnológico was a prominent stadium in Monterrey, Mexico, serving as a hub for sports and entertainment for nearly seven decades. Opened in 1950, it was a symbol of modernity and progress, hosting numerous events until its demolition in 2017. The Early Years
Estadio Tecnológico was inaugurated on July 17, 1950, by Mexican President Miguel Alemán Valdés. Initially,
the stadium had a seating capacity of 20,000, designed to accommodate the growing interest in sports within the region. The stadium was located on the campus of the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM), which owned the facility.
In its early years, Estadio Tecnológico was primarily used for football and American football games. The Borregos Salvajes, the university's American football team, played their home games here, marking the beginning of a long-standing tradition. The stadium quickly became a central venue for sports in Monterrey, attracting fans and athletes alike.
Expansion and Major Events
Over the years, Estadio Tecnológico underwent several expansions to increase its capacity and enhance its facilities. In 1965, an upper deck was added, boosting the seating capacity to 33,600. This expansion was celebrated with a match between C.F. Monterrey and FK Vojvodina, which Monterrey won 2-1.
The stadium's capacity was further increased to 38,000 seats in 1986, with the addition of the north end zone's "horseshoe". This expansion was in preparation for the 1986 FIFA World Cup, during which Estadio Tecnológico hosted three matches. The stadium also hosted the 1983 FIFA World Youth Championship, further cementing its status as a key venue for international events.
Decline and Demolition
Despite its historical significance, Estadio Tecnológico faced challenges in the mid-2000s. It was considered obsolete by some, prompting discussions about building a new stadium. In 2015, C.F. Monterrey moved to the newly constructed Estadio BBVA Bancomer, signaling the end of an era for Estadio Tecnológico.
The stadium was demolished in 2017 to make way for an urban redevelopment project known as Distrito Tec. This project included new academic buildings and a sporting complex, marking a new chapter for the ITESM campus.
