Tuxedo, New York, is a town and village located in Orange County, along the Ramapo River. With a rich history dating back to its Native American roots, Tuxedo has evolved over the centuries into a unique community. The town's name is derived from a Lenape word meaning "round foot" or "place of the Wolf-Clan People," reflecting its deep historical connections.
Early History and Development
The area now known as Tuxedo was originally inhabited by the Lenni-Lenape, a branch of the Algonquian
language family. European-American colonists later adopted the name for the town they developed. In the 18th century, English and German settlers arrived, many of whom worked at the nearby Sterling Iron Works. The town played a role in the Revolutionary War, with several local men serving in the conflict.
In the 19th century, the Augusta Forge was established, marking the beginning of Tuxedo's industrial development. The forge went out of business by 1812, and the land was sold to Pierre Lorillard II, who used it for lumbering. The area continued to grow, with the establishment of the Greenwood Furnace in 1810 and the construction of churches and other community buildings.
The Birth of Tuxedo Park
In the late 19th century, Pierre Lorillard IV conceived the idea of Tuxedo Park, a planned community and resort. By 1886, the Tuxedo Club opened, featuring a range of amenities including a boathouse, racetrack, and golf course. The resort attracted financial and social leaders, leading to the construction of over 250 houses and stables in the area.
Tuxedo Park became an incorporated village in 1952, separating from the Town of Tuxedo. Today, it comprises 2,050 acres, including three lakes and about 340 housing units. The historic district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, recognizing its architectural and historical significance.
Modern Developments and Community
In recent years, Tuxedo has continued to evolve. In 2019, voters approved the incorporation of the rest of the town as the Village of Tuxedo, consolidating the town and village governments in 2021. This move aimed to prevent new incorporations and manage local developments effectively.
Tuxedo is home to the annual New York Renaissance Faire and offers a range of educational opportunities through the Tuxedo Union Free School District. The town's rich history and ongoing development make it a unique and vibrant community, blending historical significance with modern living.
