Auto Club Speedway, located in Fontana, California, was a prominent venue for a variety of motorsport events from its opening in 1997 until its closure in 2023. Known for its versatility and capacity to host different types of races, the speedway was a favorite among racing fans and drivers alike. This article delves into the diverse range of events that took place at Auto Club Speedway over the years.
NASCAR and Stock Car Racing
From its inception, Auto Club Speedway was a key
location for NASCAR events. The track hosted its first NASCAR race in 1997, quickly becoming a staple in the NASCAR Cup Series calendar. Initially, the speedway held one NASCAR weekend each year, but in 2004, a second race was added, allowing fans to enjoy more high-speed action.
The track's D-shaped oval design and 2-mile length made it ideal for stock car racing, providing thrilling races and memorable moments. However, due to declining attendance, the second NASCAR race was removed in 2011, and the speedway returned to hosting a single annual NASCAR event until its closure.
Open-Wheel Racing and IndyCar
In addition to NASCAR, Auto Club Speedway was a significant venue for open-wheel racing. The track hosted the Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) series from 1997 to 2002, with the Marlboro 500 serving as the season finale. Known for its high speeds and competitive racing, the event was a highlight of the CART calendar.
The IndyCar Series also made its mark at Auto Club Speedway, with races held from 2002 to 2005 and again from 2012 to 2015. The track was known for setting closed-course speed records, with drivers reaching incredible speeds during qualifying sessions. The 2015 MAVTV 500 was the last IndyCar race held at the speedway.
Other Motorsport Events
Beyond NASCAR and IndyCar, Auto Club Speedway hosted a variety of other motorsport events. The track featured a dragstrip, known as the Auto Club Dragway, which was popular among drag racing enthusiasts. The infield was reconfigured to accommodate a multipurpose road course, allowing for sports car and motorcycle races.
The speedway's versatility and capacity to host different types of events made it a beloved venue for motorsport fans. Despite its closure in 2023, Auto Club Speedway's legacy as a hub for racing events remains a significant part of its history.
