Solidarnost Samara Arena, also known as Samara Arena or Cosmos Arena, is a striking example of modern stadium architecture. Located in Samara, Russia, this stadium was one of the venues for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Its design and construction reflect a blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal, making it a significant landmark in the region.
Design and Construction
The design of Solidarnost Samara Arena was approved by Glavgosexpertiza of Russia in 2017. The stadium's most
notable architectural feature is its metal dome, inspired by space exploration. This dome covers the entire stadium and is supported by beam-like structures, giving it the appearance of a star or spacecraft. The dome's minimal curve and nearly flat surface add to its futuristic look.
The stadium's elliptical foundation supports two levels of spectator seats, all covered by the roof. The stands are heated, ensuring comfort for spectators in various weather conditions. The stadium's diameter of about 330 meters exceeds that of the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, highlighting its grand scale. The dome is an assembled structure of 32 cantilevers resting on 21.4-meter-high pyramidal legs, with a total roof weight of 13,000 tons.
Capacity and Facilities
Solidarnost Samara Arena has a total capacity of 44,918 spectators, with 1,125 VIP box seats and 75 premium seats. The stadium's total area is 160,498.10 square meters, and it has a structural volume of 503,480 cubic meters. The height of the stadium is 60 meters, and it features two levels of open stands and two levels of skyboxes.
The stadium was awarded the BREEAM certificate for its energy conservation and ecological design. It is rated as a Category Four stadium by UEFA, the highest category, indicating its top-tier facilities and infrastructure. The stadium's foundation is a monolithic reinforced concrete slab, with over 230,000 cubic meters of concrete used in its construction.
Location and Accessibility
Initially planned to be built on an island south of Samara, the stadium was relocated to the northwestern part of the city, between Dalnyaya and Arena 2018 Streets and Moskovskoye Highway. This location is at the highest point of the city, providing a strategic vantage point.
The stadium is accessible from the railway station, which is 15 kilometers away, and from Kurumoch Airport, 32 kilometers away. The surrounding area includes a high-density residential neighborhood and historical sites, adding to the cultural significance of the location. The stadium's design and location make it a prominent feature in Samara's urban landscape, reflecting both modernity and tradition.
