Rostov Arena, located in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, is a significant football stadium with a capacity of 45,000 spectators. It was one of the venues for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and now serves as the home ground for FC Rostov. The construction of this stadium was a monumental task, marked by several key phases and challenges that were overcome to create this modern sports facility.
Groundbreaking and Early Challenges
The construction of Rostov Arena began with its groundbreaking in June 2013.
During this initial phase, an unexpected discovery was made when five shells from World War II were found, almost perfectly preserved. This discovery highlighted the historical significance of the site and added an element of complexity to the construction process. Despite this, work continued, and by August 2013, efforts were focused on creating a sandy alluvium foundation for the stadium.
The foundation work was completed in May 2014, marking a significant milestone in the construction timeline. However, the project faced financial challenges, leading to a revision of the stadium's design in March 2015. This revision aimed to reduce construction costs by 3 billion rubles, ensuring the project remained financially viable.
Building the Structure
With the foundation in place, construction of the stadium's substructure commenced in October 2015. This phase involved the use of heavy equipment and construction materials, which were brought to the site in December of the same year. By January 2015, crews began driving piles, a crucial step in ensuring the stability and durability of the stadium.
The summer of 2015 saw the completion of pile driving, allowing for the construction of the superstructure to begin. By December 2015, work had started on the installation of the metal roof frame, a distinctive feature of the stadium's design. The following year, in July 2016, construction of the concrete stadium bowl began, alongside the development of the facade and landscaping of the surrounding area.
Completion and Opening
The reinforced concrete work of the stadium's main bowl was fully completed by November 2016, paving the way for the installation of load-bearing roof structures. The construction of Rostov Arena was officially completed on December 22, 2017, marking the end of a challenging yet rewarding journey.
The stadium hosted its first game on April 15, 2018, between FC Rostov and FC SKA-Khabarovsk. It was officially opened on May 13, 2018, with a friendly match between FC Rostov and FK Ural. The completion of Rostov Arena not only provided a world-class venue for the 2018 FIFA World Cup but also established a new landmark in Rostov-on-Don, contributing to the city's development and international recognition.
