fashion brand Prada has revealed a special inner-layer garment that NASA astronauts are likely to wear during the future lunar missions. As per Reuters, this clothing was revealed on Sunday in New York and is developed in partnership with Houston-based space company Axiom Space. This garment is designed to help astronauts manage body heat inside their spacesuits by using built-in ventilation technology.

Why Is The Outfit Special?

As per Reuters, unlike ordinary clothing, Prada’s new space garment is a liquid cooling and ventilation garment (LCVG). It is reportedly designed to fit closely to the body and contains a network of ventilation tubes knitted directly into the fabric.These tubes could help astronauts with cooling fluid and air around their body. This is necessary as astronauts may generate significant body heat while walking, working and carrying out scientific tasks on the surface of the Moon. Since spacesuits can be heavily insulated, excess heat can become a serious problem without an effective cooling system. The Moon offers extreme environmental conditions. Notably, the astronauts usually spend a long time inside the pressurised spacesuits that limit their natural airflow and prevent sweat from evaporating normally. This cooling outfit can help regulate their body temperature, improve comfort and, most importantly, reduce the risk of overheating. Prada’s involvement may appear unusual at first, but the fashion brand notes that expertise from various industries can contribute to space exploration.

To recall, the fashion brand entered the space industry in 2024 when it worked on a spacesuit project likely to be used for NASA's Artemis 4 moon mission, which is targeted for 2028. The newly unveiled cooling outfit is another major step in the partnership. Prada is the latest example that shows how space exploration is rapidly attracting organisations outside the traditional aerospace industry. If the cooling outfit performs well during the future lunar missions, it may open the door for more such collaborations.
