For years, WhatsApp users have waited for one thing: usernames. No phone number sharing, no awkward “save my contact first” moments. And while the Meta-owned messaging app has quietly been testing the username system
in the background, a new update suggests the feature may go even further than expected. According to WhatsApp tipster WABetaInfo, the platform is now working on letting users choose the same username they already use on Facebook and Instagram. Yes, you may finally have one unified identity across Meta apps. What’s New With WhatsApp Usernames?WhatsApp’s username plans aren’t new, leaks and early experiments have been popping up for months. But the latest development spotted in WhatsApp Beta for Android 2.25.34.3 signals a major step forward. Per screenshots shared by WABetaInfo, a new Username option will show up under the Profile section inside WhatsApp Settings. From there, users will be able to reserve their preferred username and if they already use one on Facebook or Instagram, they can try to claim the same one here too. Of course, Meta isn’t handing out usernames blindly. There will be a verification step through Meta’s Accounts Centre to confirm you actually own the handle you're trying to reserve.ALSO READ: OnePlus 15 vs Oppo Find X9 Pro: Launch Date In India, Price, Design, Specifications, Camera And MoreOne Username Across Meta AppsHaving one consistent username across WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram isn’t just a convenience play. For creators, businesses, and brands, it’s a big win. A unified handle means better online identity protection, easier discoverability and a more seamless cross-platform presence. Like fewer fake accounts, fewer naming conflicts and a cleaner digital footprint. If you don’t currently own your desired username on Meta apps, though, you may have to wait until the public rollout, as hinted by WABetaInfo. When Will It Roll Out?Before you rush to grab your @handle, this feature still isn't live for everyone. In fact, not even Play Store beta testers have access yet. The system is still being developed and will roll out in phases, likely starting with wider beta testing in the coming weeks. The tech giant has already confirmed the full username system will go live before Meta’s 2026 compliance deadline, so we’re definitely moving closer.
