"How can you do this to Suriya?" "Was Karuppu written by Vijay?" These are some of the questions flooding the comments section of director RJ Balaji's picture with C Joseph Vijay, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. But how did a picture of a filmmaker expressing his happiness at meeting a superstar end up sparking controversy? The reason lies in the caption penned by RJ Balaji, which read, 'With the man who started it all for Karuppu.' hinting that the inception of Karuppu began with Vijay. While some users called it a picture-perfect moment, others criticised the director for not being clear about the film's original casting choice. This has left several fans wondering whether Vijay was initially involved in the project and why Suriya's contribution
was not acknowledged.

Over the years, RJ Balaji has made different statements about the film.
In some interviews, he said that Vijay was in his mind during the writing stage. In a college cultural event he said, "
