Perfect
Crown is about to reveal its real villain, or at least that's what the finale preview suggests. After intense, emotionally high, and shocking episodes 9 and 10, the IU and Byeon Woo-Seok show is now headed to its last week. With a cliffhanger ending of episode 10, which can easily be called a "fiery" one (literally!), the fate of a lot of characters, mainly our leads, Seong Hui-ju and Grand Prince I-an is at stake. We already saw characters like Yoon Yi-rang aka Queen Mother, Prime Minister Min Jeong-woo, and Yoon Sung-won taking centre stage of all the plotting and planning, will they ultimately also emerge as the masterminds?
Perfect Crown's real villain - Decoded
In
Perfect Crown, the "real villain" has so far been intentionally kept layered rather than limited to one person. The drama presents different forms of power, obsession, and corruption through multiple characters, leaving viewers debating about who is truly responsible for the tragedy surrounding Hui-ju and Grand Prince I-an, including the big fire that killed the late king (I-an's older brother) and the leak of their marriage contract.
Breakdown of villains: Who is the true antagonist?
In the intricate web of scandals and royal intrigue, the drama operates on different layers of antagonism. Each of the three aforementioned antagonists represents a different type of threat, from political to personal and systemic.
1. Yoon Yi-rang - Tragic political villain
Yi-rang aka Queen Dowager, is not evil in a straightforward sense. She is portrayed as a deeply tragic woman who sacrificed her own love and freedom for royal duty. We saw how she had to give up her dream of becoming a pianist and her one-sided love for Ian after her father betrothed her to the elder brother. Her obsession with protecting the throne and her son pushes her into morally questionable decisions, including manipulating palace politics and protecting dangerous people around her.
What makes her compelling is that many of her actions come from fear, regret, and years of emotional suppression. She represents the emotional cost of monarchy and ambition. To call her the most complex "villain" won't be wrong because her actions are rooted in deep-seated resentment and sacrifice.
2. Min Jeong-Woo - Emotional, psychological villain
By Episodes 9–10, Jeong-woo increasingly feels like the drama's central antagonist. Unlike Yi-rang, his motivations become more personal and obsessive due to his unrequited love for Hui-ju. His jealousy towards I-an and his attachment to Hui-ju begin to overtake his morality. The most dangerous part about Jeong-woo is that he understands everyone emotionally. He knows Hui-ju's vulnerabilities, I-an's weaknesses, and the palace system itself.
Jeong-woo's betrayal hurts more because he was once trusted by both leads. He's even the intellectual villain, as his descent from a dependable senior to a traitor makes him the most painful antagonist. The ending of Episode 10 strongly positions him as the immediate threat, especially with his growing alliance against I-an before the deadly fire. One preview clip of episode 11 also shows him emerging from the dark, symbolically suggesting his flip as his antagonist side takes over.
3. Yoon Sung-Won - Root of corruption
Yoon Sung-won is the foundational villain and arguably represents the darkest evil in the series. As the father of Queen Dowager Yi-rang, he is the one who set the tragic events in motion years ago. He is cold, power-driven, and willing to commit murder to maintain political control. The poisoning plot and intimidation of the young king reveal how dangerous he truly is.
Unlike Yi-rang, he lacks emotional conflict or guilt, and symbolises the old power structure that sees people as tools rather than human beings. Sung-won even views the throne not as a seat of service, but as a family asset.
And the real villain is...
The drama increasingly suggests that the real villain is the palace system itself. In its world of succession battles, sacrifice, manipulation, and inherited power, every antagonist becomes corrupted by the need to control the throne. However, by impact, the most active and emotionally dangerous antagonist currently is Min Jeong-woo. He is trying to physically eliminate Prince I-an. However, if you define the villain by intent, it is Yoon Sung-won, the moral core of the corruption, whose original sin of wanting to kill a prince started this cycle of blood. Yi-rang, meanwhile, sits in the grey area between villain and victim.
