Grok AI, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk-owned xAI, is once again in the spotlight and this time not for the right reasons. The AI tool, which is deeply integrated into the social media platform
X (previously called Twitter), is facing growing criticism after users began exploiting it to generate sexualised images of women.Over the past few weeks, several users on X have been openly asking Grok to edit photos of women by changing their clothes. These requests are often made through quote posts, where users upload an image and ask Grok to 'put this girl in a bikini' or make similar changes. Shockingly, the AI has been responding to many of these prompts, resulting in a flood of revealing, AI-generated images appearing in Grok’s public media feed. What has alarmed critics the most is that this content is not hidden behind private chats. Unlike AI tools such as Gemini or ChatGPT, where image outputs are visible only to the user, Grok’s generated images are openly accessible. This means anyone browsing X can easily come across sexualised AI images, even without actively searching for them.Elon Musk has repeatedly said that Grok was designed with fewer restrictions compared to other AI chatbots. While this approach was meant to promote free expression and humour, critics say it has instead opened the door to misuse. In one recent interaction, Grok itself admitted that users are testing my image-editing skills with cheeky requests, including outfit changes and removals. Although the chatbot also mentioned that 'boundaries matter,' many users feel this statement does not match what is actually visible on the platform. This is not the first time Grok has landed in controversy. Earlier this year, when its image generation feature was launched, reports emerged that employees involved in training the AI were exposed to disturbing and explicit material. There have also been concerns around Grok’s so-called companion mode, with experts warning that such features can easily be misused if not properly moderated. The growing presence of sexualised AI content has sparked a larger debate around responsibility and safety in artificial intelligence.
