One Direction member Zayn Malik has never shied away from embracing his South Asian roots, and his latest revelations only deepen that connection. The artist, who is currently promoting his South Indian inspired album Konnakol, said that he is deeply connected to the country. In a recent interview, the singer opened up about his love for Bollywood, Indian music, and one particular Shah Rukh Khan film that holds a special place in his heart. He also called Indian soundtracks among the best in the world to admitting his own bias. Zayn also talked about how his own songs, especially in the new album, is influenced by music made in India.
Zayn loves Bollywood films and SRK
Zayn revealed in a chat with Elle India that Indian and Bollywood references naturally find their way into his daily life. “I’m always watching Indian films,” he shared, before singling out Main Hoon Na as a personal favourite. The 2004 entertainer starring Shah Rukh Khan, directed by Farah Khan, clearly left a lasting impression on the singer, who even admitted that he would happily be a part of a film like that if given the chance.
His love for Indian music runs just as deep. Zayn did not hesitate to call it among the finest globally, saying, “some of the best sound scores in the world, I would say.” He acknowledged his bias, adding that his partial Indian heritage plays a role in shaping his perspective. However, he emphasized that the admiration goes beyond personal roots. He praised the intricate craftsmanship behind Indian compositions, pointing out the “level of meticulousness” and complex instrumentation that fascinates him creatively. What truly resonates with Zayn is the emotional depth of Indian music. According to him, it feels like it comes “from the soul.” He described how music in Indian culture often acts as a form of emotional support, almost like a mantra that helps people face difficult moments. He praised its uplifting and positive nature, noting how it celebrates love and the idea of fairytale romance, adding that although that does not always match reality, it is nice.Interestingly, Zayn’s connection to Shah Rukh Khan is not limited to admiration from afar. The two stars met during the Asian Awards in London in 2015, where Zayn received the Outstanding Contribution to Music award and SRK got honoured with the Outstanding Contribution to Cinema award. Shah Rukh Khan personally congratulated him, and their interaction was possibly India's first online viral moment.
Zayn's love for K-pop
Zayn also spoke about how his daughter Khai has influenced his evolving musical tastes. He revealed that she is a dedicated K-pop fan and has introduced him to the genre. This influence recently came full circle with his collaboration with Jisoo from BLACKPINK on the track Eyes Closed. While discussing future collaborations, Zayn hinted at the possibility of working with other K-pop acts, including TWICE, though he remained tight-lipped about specifics. “Never say never,” he teased, leaving fans excited about what might come next.
