Who
are Dunk and Egg? The new HBO series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is all about their journey in the latest Game of Thrones spinoff series, ahead of House of the Dragon Season 3 later this year. Created by Ira Parker and George RR Martin, the show is based on the author's Dunk and Egg novellas. The first season of the show is adapted from the novella The Hedge Knight and first introduces Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg. Before watching episode one of the show on JioHotstar from January 19, here's a backstory on the characters played by Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell.
All about Ser Duncan the Tall
Peter Claffey, who was previously seen in the series
Bad Sisters and
Vikings: Valhalla, takes on the role of the bumbling and awkward hedge knight Dunk. After the death of his master, Ser Arlan of Pennytree,
he becomes Ser Duncan the Tall and heads to the Ashford Tourney to compete against the other knights. The hedge knight has a rough go at it in Ashford, but he has the backing of some good allies, including Prince Baelor Targaryen (Bertie Carvel). In the first season, Dunk also fights a battle for his honor and name against the Targaryens, led by Prince Aerion (Finn Bennett).
All about Egg
Dexter Sol Ansell stars as the other lead, Egg. The young boy with the shaved head first meets Dunk (Claffey) at an inn on the way to the Ashford tourney. Their first meeting does not go well. However, they meet up again at Ashford, where Egg insists that Dunk take him on as squire. Eventually, he does agree. Egg is hiding his identity from Dunk, as
spoiler alert, he is actually the missing Prince Aegon Targaryen, and his father, Prince Maekar (Sam Spruell), is looking for him.
Ansell took on the role of Egg as a nine-year-old and had to shave his head for the part. Previously, the young boy had acted in
The Midwich Cuckoos and
Christmas on Mistletoe Farm. He also played the very young version of Coriolanus Snow in
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
More about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place a century before
Game of Thrones, and 72 years after the start of
House of the Dragon. Prince Aegon is the descendant of Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) and Prince Daemon (Matt Smith), while Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) are his descendants.
