Fanfictions
among fandoms are not new, but an incident related to Stray Kids recently drew attention. A Russian photographer and fanfiction writer has been sentenced to 18 months of compulsory labour after being charged with producing “illegal pornography” for writing a Stray Kids fanfiction featuring a gay relationship. The story, reportedly published online in 2022, was later discovered on a minor’s device, prompting legal action under Russia’s expanding anti-LGBT laws. Prosecutors had initially sought a four-year prison sentence, but the court handed her compulsory labor instead. The incident has reignited discussions about censorship, fandom culture, and Russia's growing crackdown on LGBT-related content online.
Stray Kids' fanfiction writer gets punishment
According to reports, the case began after a woman allegedly discovered the fanfiction on her underage daughter’s device and reported it to authorities. The story, which had reportedly been posted online in 2022, depicted a romantic same-sex relationship. LGBT health organization Parni+ later confirmed that the work in question was based on members of Stray Kids. The writer, identified as Russian photographer Alexandra Kuzyk, admitted guilt in court and stated that writing fanfiction had long been a personal hobby. Prosecutors initially pushed for a tough punishment, reportedly seeking a four-year prison sentence but the court ultimately sentenced her to 18 months of compulsory labour instead. Reports further stated that 10% of her earnings during that period would be withheld by the state.
Meanwhile, the incident comes amid Russia's increasingly tough stance on LGBT representation and expression. In 2022, the country significantly expanded its ban on what it calls LGBT "propaganda" and increased restrictions on books, films, online content and media that are deemed to encourage unconventional relationships. Law enforcement has since been stepped up, and authorities are reportedly targeting online platforms, publishers, and fan-generated content communities.Neither Stray Kids nor their agency have publicly commented on the matter. However, the incident has attracted global attention due to its connection to K-pop fandom culture and Russia's evolving legal landscape surrounding LGBT-related media and expression.
