It looks like WhatsApp is gearing up for one of its biggest privacy-focused changes yet. According to a report from WABetaInfo, Meta-owned WhatsApp is preparing to introduce usernames across the platform,
allowing people to chat without having to share their phone number. The feature has reportedly entered its final stages and could start rolling out next year, with full adoption expected by June 2026. If it goes as planned, this shift would make WhatsApp function more like platforms such as Telegram, giving users a unique username that others can search and contact, without ever revealing their actual number. How WhatsApp Usernames Will WorkAs per WABetaInfo, users will be able to find, chat and even call others simply by using a username. This means you could talk to someone new, like a retailer or a business representative, without disclosing your personal contact number. A new Business-Scoped User ID (BSUID) is also coming for enterprise accounts. This will allow brands to communicate securely with customers while keeping phone numbers hidden. Developer documentation has already been updated with integration steps, sample workflows and encryption guidelines, suggesting that rollout plans are well underway.ALSO READ: How To Install WhatsApp On Your Apple Watch: Check This Simple Step-By-Step GuideMore Privacy, Less HesitationThe upcoming feature is being described internally as a “privacy-first modernisation.” Engineers reportedly had to rebuild significant parts of WhatsApp’s infrastructure so usernames can work seamlessly without compromising end-to-end encryption. For users, this means more privacy and freedom, especially when interacting with unknown numbers, businesses, or online communities.Rollout Timeline And Business DeadlineWhile everyday users will get access to usernames as the feature rolls out, WhatsApp has reportedly set a firm deadline for businesses. All companies using WhatsApp’s API must support the username system by June 2026, the report notes.Safeguards Against SpamOf course, usernames could also tempt scammers or spammers. To counter that, WhatsApp is preparing an extra security layer called “username keys,” which will likely help filter unwanted contact attempts and verify legitimate connections.
