The
artificial intelligence boom is real. AI has been adopted in various sectors like education, healthcare, software development and more. Amid the rising popularity of Anthropic's Mythos, defence systems officials across the world now potentially have the tools in mind that could shake the economies of countries. As per Politico, the Pentagon is now exploring whether advanced AI tools could move beyond defence and into cyber warfare.
Pentagon Eyes Powerful AI Systems
As per the publication, the US agency is studying how
AI models with the potential to hack systems might be used in the military and intelligence operations. This report cites a leaked email and two unnamed sources familiar with the effort. Reportedly, this report was announced by Joshua Rudd, the lead of US Cyber Command and the National Security Agency. The task force is likely to examine how frontier AI systems could safely operate inside highly classified government networks. Officials are believed to be exploring how these systems may help detect cyber threats, identify software bugs and speed up military decision-making.
Interest in Anthropic’s Mythos Model
The point of discussion remains the Claude Mythos Preview. It is an unreleased AI version that is led by
Anthropic. This model reportedly comes with the hacking capabilities and has been declared dangerous for public use. Notably, the Pentagon is officially restricted from openly working with Anthropic, as the company has been labelled a ‘supply chain risk’ after a legal dispute with the Trump government. Despite these restrictions, the publication notes that the government body might explore the use of ethos because of its potential military value. As defence agencies across the world are racing to understand frontier AI, an important question arises: if machines can learn to hack, defend and strike faster than humans, who will remain in control when the next cyber conflict starts?
