Shah has now become an established actress in Indian cinema. She has done some pathbreaking films that helped her get in the race to be one of the leading ladies of Indian cinema. Shefali made her big screen debut with Rangeela (1995); however, in an exclusive interview with Zoom, Shefali confessed that she can’t watch the Ram Gopal Varma-directed film. She had differences with RGV over her role in the Urmila Matondkar starrer. The Delhi Crime actress credited her dear friend, Manoj Bajpayee, for sorting her differences with Ram Gopal Varma. Shefali also revealed how she came on board for Satya and won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics) for it.
Shefali Shah On Getting Disappointed With Her Role In Rangeela
During a candid chat with us, Shefali Shah confessed that she can’t watch herself in Rangeela because it was not that kind of character which she had initially thought in her mind. Shefali said, “I have not got myself to watch Rangeela. I will just die of embarrassment. Hence, I haven't seen it. Either I perceived it, or there was a communication problem where I thought the role was bigger than it actually was. When I started shooting for it, I realised it was not even one of the important tracks of the film. I was like, 'This is not what I signed up for.' This was not what was explained to me.” Shefali Shah decided not to shoot more for Rangeela. The actress revealed, “So, I respectfully backed off. I shot a scene, and then I told them that I can't do more than this anymore. I couldn't get myself to watch it. I still don't want to watch it. I almost pretend that it was not my first film.”
After Rangeela, Shefali Shah worked with Ram Gopal Varma again in Satya (1998). The film turned out to be a game changer for her. However, Shefali’s casting story for the film is rather interesting. Shefali revealed, “Manoj Bajpayee was a very dear friend of mine. He told me that RGV is making a film, and he is thinking of you for this part. Manoj told me that RGV didn't know if I would say yes to it. Then, Ramu ji sent Anurag Kashyap to me. Anurag explained to me exactly how many scenes and songs I have in the film, Satya.” “So, I said yes to it. On the set, RGV was very gracious. He would explain the situation to us and ask us to take over. I understood very early in my career that it is not about the length of the role but the strength of the role,” the actress added.
Shefali Shah On Winning Best Actress Critics For Satya
Shefali Shah stole the limelight with her performance in Satya. Especially, she danced well in the Sapne Mein Milti Hai song. While speaking about the cult song, the actress stated, “Manoj is a friend. Saurabh Shukla and Anurag Kashyap were also there. I had a blast while shooting for Satya. When we were shooting for Sapne Mein Milti Hai, I didn't realise that we were making a cult song. I was too young to understand. I feel so proud that I have been a part of such amazing films.”
In 1999, Shefali Shah won the Best Actress Critics Award at the Filmfare Awards. While speaking about it, the Dil Dhadakne Do star said, “At the Filmfare Awards 1999, I was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress honour. I had made an ugly suit for the award night. I looked like Jackie Chan in it with a bandhgala. It was horrible, pathetic. I knew that I would not win it. I was like, 'Okay,' when the name was announced. When they announced my name as Best Actress Critics, it took time for me to register it. For me, Critics is an even higher award. I didn't even imagine it. It was insane.” Talking about Shefali Shah, the actress has worked in several films such as Satya, Mohabbatein, Monsoon Wedding, Waqt, Gandhi My Father, Black And White, Dil Dhadakne Do, Jalsa, Darlings and so on.
