After the launch of premium snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 mobile processor recently, US-based chipset giant Qualcomm has officially announced the launch of its latest mid-premium chipset -- the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 which claims to offer flagship-level performance, AI intelligence and improved gaming to mid-premium smartphones. The company says the new chipset continues the expansion of its 8-series family, giving OEMs more flexibility while ensuring users get top-tier features without always paying ultra-premium prices. The new chipset will power upcoming flagship smartphones from brands like iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, and Vivo. Many of these phones are expected to launch in the coming weeks. One of the biggest upgrades this year is how the chipset handles
AI. Qualcomm says the new Sensing Hub can detect when a user picks up their phone and instantly wake their AI assistant. This could make simple tasks more seamless, especially with the rise of on-device generative AI assistants. The Hexagon NPU gets a major jump too, with up to 46 per cent better AI performance, enabling more context-aware and personalised suggestions without relying heavily on the cloud. For users, this translates to faster smart features, better text generation, improved voice recognition, and more efficient on-device processing.Under the hood, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 packs Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU, capable of hitting peak speeds of up to 3.8GHz. Qualcomm claims a 36 per cent performance boost and 76 per cent faster web browsing responsiveness, which should be noticeable in everyday apps as well as multitasking.Gamers also get an upgrade thanks to the new Adreno GPU. The company promises an 11 per cent improvement in graphics performance, smoother gameplay and better thermal efficiency.“As the demand for premium smartphones continues to surge, Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is perfectly positioned to meet and exceed consumers’ evolving expectations. We’ve reimagined our 8 series family, putting premium performance into the hands of more consumers worldwide,” said Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager, mobile handset, Qualcomm.
