Shahid Kapoor’s fourth film with Vishal Bhardwaj, O’ Romeo, has released in theatres. Based on Hussain Ustara and Sapna Didi’s chapter from Hussain Zaidi’s Mafia Queens of Mumbai, the gangster romantic drama received mixed reviews on the first day. It is a slow-burning film with a duration of 2 hours and 58 minutes. Bhardwaj has taken creative liberty to elaborate on the short story. O’ Romeo includes all the elements of a commercial potboiler, such as song and dance numbers, romance, action and drama. The film starts well, but by the end of it, the screenplay feels dragged and unexciting. O’ Romeo is a melancholic film. There is action, gore and violence in abundance. But do Ustara and Afshan manage to fulfil their revenge? Let’s decode the climax
of O’ Romeo. (Spoiler alert)
O' Romeo story
Ustara (Shahid) is a local gangster known for his sharp blade-wielding. Set in 1995, Mumbai, he lives with his grandmother (Farida Jalal) on a boat. Though he is not on the right side of the law, a cop named Khan (Nana Patekar) depends on him for information about the D-Company. Afshan (Triptii Dimri) enters his world. She is avenging her husband, Mehboob’s death. Ustara decides to help her. As she takes the risk to shoot one of five culprits, Afshan is severely injured, and he comes to her rescue. Since she is injured, Ustara brings her home and nurses her. Gradually, she recovers, and he trains her in shooting. One night, she decides to return to her hometown. Ustara, now left all alone, misses her.
After learning about the death of Jalal’s gang member, Khan confronts
Ustara. On the other hand, Jalal (Avinash Tiwary), who is in Spain, is vengeful. A few months later, Ustara starts looking out for Afshan, and his lead is the owner of a biryani restaurant. When he follows her, he sees Afshan in a completely new avatar. She is married to Inspector Pathare (
Rahul Deshpande). It is a well-planned move to avenge Mehboob’s death. During the Ganesh Visarjan procession, Afshan, who is disguised as Rani Sharma, stabs her second prey. Ustara is a witness to that.
Revenge begins
It is then revealed that
Afshan has joined hands with Khan to kill Jalal and his men. She meets him in a local train. However, Ustara learns that Pathare will be joining them in the same compartment. He asks her to get off the train at the next station. Amid a scuffle, Khan is left seriously injured and Ustara is assumed dead. Afshan is heartbroken. But, she gets a chance to go to Spain with Pathare to attend Jalal’s masquerade party.
She uses the same stabbing needle hidden beneath a ring to kill Jalal. During this, she is exposed. Instead of killing her, Jalal signals her to smash Pathare’s head. Afshan is held hostage at Jalal’s Spain house. Miraculously, Ustara survives the train accident, but has damaged his vocal cords. He learns Afshan’s whereabouts and travels to Spain. With
Jalal’s wife, Rabia’s (
Tamannaah Bhatia) help, he rescues her. They fight multiple rounds of bullets.
Final battle
In the final round of battle, which is against Jalal, Ustara gets beaten and injured. But he doesn’t lose hope. Emerging victorious, he lets Afshan pierce the sword through him. Jalal is dead. Ustara recovers. Khan is still in the hospital, recovering. The story of Ustara and Afshan is likely to continue, as hinted in the last dialogue.
Said to be a modern adaptation of Romeo and Juliet,
O’ Romeo draws its inspiration from real people and stories. Disha Patani also features in the film, but in an insignificant role.
