The head of Instagram has stood for his platform against claims that suggest it causes mental health damage to minors. He did the same in an argument that was happening in a California court, where he said that excessive use of Instagram cannot be classified as addiction. Adam Mosseri, who was the front man at Instagram for more than eighth years, appeared in a landmark trial that happened in Los Angeles, making him the first high-profile executive to set foot in court. Expectations are that the trial will g on for six weeks and will serve as a test of legal arguments aimed at holding tech firms accountable for impacts on young people. Lawyers for Meta, which owns Instagram, have argued the lead plaintiff in the case, known by her initials KGM,
was hurt by other things in her life, not Instagram. And Instagram is not alone in the lawsuit, as YouTube is also named here, along with TikTok and Snapchat. The suit mentions that the jury will have to consider whether Instagram was a substantial factor in the plaintiff's mental health struggle, arguing the evidence shows that she faced multiple challenges in her life well before she used social media. At the beginning of the testimony, Adam agreed on a broad point made by Mark Lanier, KGM's lead attorney, that Instagram should do everything within its power to help keep users safe on the platform, and the main focus should be on the safety of young people. Mosseri said, 'It's important to differentiate between clinical addiction and problematic use. I'm sure I've said that I've been addicted to a Netflix show when I binged it really late one night, but I don't think it's the same thing as clinical addiction.' When Lanier asked Mosseri's thoughts on KGM's longest single day Insta use of 16 hours, he said, 'That sounds like problematic use.'All in all, the crux right now is that the users have to be aware that there are a lot of things that can be done on Meta's part, but it is kind of a responsibility for the parents out there as well to monitor what the child is using Instagram or any other social media or AI app for.
