Tamil
cinema has finally found its first major blockbuster of 2026, and it comes in the form of Karuppu. Headlined by Suriya, the fantasy action-drama has crossed the coveted Rs 100 crore mark at the Indian box office within just one week of release, reviving not only the actor’s box office dominance but also giving a much-needed boost to the Tamil film industry. The film has collected Rs 100.14 crore net domestically in seven days, becoming the first Tamil film in nine months to achieve the milestone. This huge comeback by Suriya has brought great news for Kollywood's box office numbers.
Karuppu revives Kollywood box office
The success of
Karuppu has come as a major relief for the industry after a relatively dry spell at the Tamil box office. The last Tamil film to comfortably cross the Rs 100 crore mark in India was
Coolie starring Rajinikanth, which released during the Independence Day weekend last year and went on to earn Rs 285 crore nett in India and Rs 518 crore worldwide. Other successful Tamil films like
Good Bad Ugly starring Ajith Kumar (and Karuppu's lead actress Trisha Krishnan) and
Dragon featuring Pradeep Ranganathan also managed to cross the Rs 100 crore milestone last year, but 2026 had not witnessed a similar blockbuster until now.
The film’s box office performance has been driven primarily by Tamil Nadu, where it has collected Rs 85.14 crore net so far. Its Telugu-dubbed version has also contributed significantly with Rs 15 crore net, proving that the film has found acceptance beyond its core Tamil-speaking audience. Overseas too, the film has emerged as a sensation. With Rs 57 crore gross internationally in its first week,
Karuppu has already become the highest-grossing Tamil film overseas in 2026. Its total worldwide collection now stands at an impressive Rs 175.17 crore gross.
