Instagram recently rolled out a brand-new feature called “Instants” and not everyone seems thrilled about it. The Meta-owned platform says the feature is designed to make photo sharing feel more spontaneous and authentic, somewhat similar to how Snapchat works. But shortly after launch, many users found themselves accidentally sharing photos with friends without fully understanding how the feature actually behaves. And yes, that has already created a fair bit of confusion online. What Is Instagram’s New Instants Feature? The popular social media platform introduced Instants as a disappearing photo-sharing tool inside Instagram DMs. When users tap the small photo stack icon in the corner of their inbox, Instagram opens a quick tutorial explaining
that Instants disappear after viewing, reactions remain private and there’s no public viewer list.Sounds simple enough at first. But here’s where users got caught off guard. Once the camera opens, there’s a shutter button sitting front and centre, along with a toggle between “Friends” and “Close Friends.” By default, Instagram keeps it set to “Friends.”That means the moment you tap the shutter button, the photo gets instantly shared with everyone on your Friends list unless you manually change the setting beforehand. The US-based tech giant does offer an “Undo” button immediately after sending, but many users either missed it completely or didn’t realise a photo had already been sent out.Why Users Are UpsetUnlike Stories or regular posts, where people usually review and edit content before uploading, Instants works almost instantly, literally. That sudden send mechanism has frustrated many users, especially those who accidentally shared personal or awkward photos. On platforms like Instagram, where users are used to carefully curating what they post, the feature’s design feels unusually aggressive to some people. Privacy concerns are now becoming a major talking point around the rollout.AI Can Now Extract Fingerprints From Photos, Here’s Why Experts Are ConcernedHow To Undo An Instagram InstantThankfully, Instagram does offer a way to retract accidentally shared photos.Right after sending an Instant, users will notice an “Undo” option appearing below the shutter button. Tapping it quickly can unsend the image before others open it.There’s another method too.Users can head into the archive section by tapping the four-box icon located at the top-right corner inside the Instants camera interface. From there, deleting the Instant will unsend it for anyone who hasn’t viewed it yet.How To Turn Off Instagram Instants CompletelyIf you simply don’t want to deal with the feature anymore, Instagram also offers an option to disable it.Here’s how:-Open Instagram profile-Tap the three-line menu in the top-right corner-Go to “Content Preferences”-Toggle on “Hide Instants in Inbox”Once enabled, Instants will disappear from your inbox entirely, and you won’t receive Instants from others either.
