the ongoing legal battle over Sunjay Kapur’s will, the late businessman’s wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, approached the Supreme Court seeking access to certified copies of records from the 2016 divorce proceedings between him and his ex-wife, Karisma Kapoor. On Friday, the Supreme Court asked the actress to file her objections in two weeks to a fresh application, seeking details of her divorce proceedings. For the unversed, Karisma and Sunjay’s children are fighting a legal case against Priya, their stepmother, over a Rs 30,000 crore estate left behind by their late father, alleging that the will has been forged by her.

In response to Priya’s application seeking access to the divorce proceedings, NDTV’s report claimed that Karisma’s lawyers argued that it was not maintainable as the consent terms and the divorce decree were already filed by Priya in another matter in the Delhi High Court.

Priya’s application was considered in-chamber hearing and seeks certified copies of the divorce settlement and custody arrangements finalised in 2016. Kapur’s counsel submitted that these documents are directly relevant to the present estate litigation, where issues concerning financial provision, child support, and post-divorce obligations have been repeatedly raised before the Delhi High Court.

Karisma and Sunjay's divorce was widely reported at the time as contentious. Court records and contemporaneous media reports indicate that the proceedings involved serious allegations and counter-allegations relating to marital conduct, financial arrangements, and custody. The matter ultimately concluded through a settlement recorded, which addressed custody of the children as well as financial terms agreed between the parties. As per reports, during the ongoing estate dispute, submissions have been made regarding the children’s financial arrangements and education expenses, bringing renewed focus on what was agreed between the former spouses at the time of divorce.

Senior counsel Maninder Singh, on behalf of Priya, indicated that clarity on the divorce settlement is necessary to assess whether issues now being raised were already addressed and resolved during Sunjay’s lifetime. Replying to Priya’s counsel’s demand, Karisma's lawyers, Ravi Sharma and Apoorv Shukla, objected to the application, calling it ‘frivolous’. They claimed that it was intended to dig out personal information in a matter from the family court, which is confidential between the former couple. After hearing Karisma’s defence, the Supreme Court granted her two weeks to put her objections in the form of a reply.
