Udit
Narayan landed in another controversy. The veteran singer’s first wife, Ranjana Narayan Jha, has accused him of getting her uterus removed without her permission. She filed a police complaint at Bihar’s Supaul Mahila Thana, Ranjana Jha, alleging that his two brothers and second wife Deepa took her to a hospital in Delhi for the procedure under the guise of medical treatment. The complaint was lodged on February 10. Ranjana claimed that her uterus was removed in 1996, and she learnt about it recently when she visited a doctor for other health concerns. Udit married Deepa (nee Gahatraj) in 1985 in Mumbai, a year after tying the knot with Ranjana.
Who is Ranjana Narayan Jha?
Ranjana, a resident of Balua Bazar in Supaul, married
Udit before he became a successful singer in the Hindi film industry. They were living together in Bihar after their marriage. However, Udit left Bihar to pursue a career in music in Bollywood and came to Mumbai. In 1985, he married Deepa in Mumbai, reportedly without divorcing Ranjana. The 61-year-old woman had filed a maintenance case against Udit in 2025. He appeared before the Supaul Family Court.
Court case with Udit Narayan
During the hearing at the
Supaul Family Court, Udit refused to settle with Ranjana and decided to contest the case. In her lawsuit, Ranjana claimed that the singer abandoned her in Bihar and when she visits him in Mumbai, she is tracked by goons. She also alleged that he kept Rs 18 lakh away from her after the sale of a property in Nepal. Demanding her rights as his legal wife, Ranjana expressed wanting to live with him amid deteriorating health. In addition, the matter was escalated to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Bihar Human Rights Commission (BHRC), where S K Jha argued that under Indian law, a second marriage without divorcing the first wife is illegal under the Hindu Marriage Act. By this,
Udit’s marriage to Deepa was considered
unlawful. The veteran lawyer further emphasised that the singer disrespected and disregarded Ranjana’s human rights.
Udit Narayan's defence
On the other hand, sources close to Udit claimed that the veteran singer reportedly paid Rs 15,000 per month as maintenance, which was increased to Rs 25,000 in 2021. Besides this, Narayan gifted her agricultural land, a house worth Rs 1 crore, jewellery, and another piece of land worth Rs 25 lakh.
After many years, Ranjana came out in public to claim that she had not received support from Udit as his first wife and reached out to the
Women’s Commission in 2006. She said the singer had promised her a home and financial support, but it wasn’t fulfilled. While Udit and Deepa have a son named
Aditya Narayan, who is also a singer, Ranjana lives alone with no children.
