Months after the passing of her sister Lata Mangeshkar in 2022, Asha had described herself as the “last Mughal” of Hindi film music. Today, following her own demise on April 12, 2026, that statement echoes like a farewell to an entire golden era. With her passing at 92, Indian music has lost its last living bridge to a time that defined generations.

During her appearance on Dance India Dance Little Masters Season 5, Asha Bhosle spoke with rare honesty about the void left by her contemporaries and how Lata Didi reminded her of it when she was alive. Recalling the loss of iconic voices like Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, and Geeta Dutt, she talked about how an entire generation had slowly faded away.

In an emotional moment, she remembered how Lata Mangeshkar had told her, “Abhi hum dono aakhri Mughal ruke hai." After Lata's death, Asha recalled saying, "Uss din maine kaha ‘Tu bhi chali gayi’. Ab uss zamane ki main aakhri hoon.” The words were simple, yet deeply moving. Asha continued, "Maine 1943 mein pehla gaana gaaya hai aur aaj tak main gaa rahi hoon. Aakhri Mughal main hoon."The episode itself was dedicated to Lata Mangeshkar, celebrating her legacy. Together, the two sisters defined Indian playback singing for decades. While they recorded thousands of songs individually, they came together for around 80 duets, a surprisingly small number considering their vast discographies. Despite their individual journeys, their combined presence shaped the sound of Hindi cinema. Their voices transcended language, genre, and time, becoming an inseparable part of India’s cultural fabric. Coincidentally, both sisters died on a Sunday. Lata died on February 6, 2022.

Following her passing due to multiple organ failure at a Mumbai hospital, Asha Bhosle’s mortal remains have been kept at her Lower Parel residence for fans and well-wishers to pay their last respects. Her son, Anand Bhosle, has urged people to maintain order during the final rites. The public has been allowed to visit for antim darshan between 10:30 am and 2 pm, after which the funeral will take place at the Shivaji Park crematorium at 4 pm. Given the expected turnout and nearby gatherings, the family has requested fans not to crowd the crematorium to avoid any inconvenience or safety concerns.
