The study concluded that people performed well when they were allowed to use AI for heavy reasoning-based tasks like math problems and understanding information. However, the issue began

when researchers removed the AI tools and tested the same participants. After taking away the support. The performance of the participants dropped. They were found to be making more mistakes and were not much interested in answering the difficult questions. Notably, the study highlighted a short support of 10 minutes for AI-assisted problems was enough to reduce the efficiency and performance of the participants.The study involved multiple tests with hundreds of participants. One involved 350 participants who solved the fraction-based math problems, while the other group involved 670 participants. A third group was made to read comprehensions instead of solving the math problems. As a result, all three groups were found with the same pattern, where their performance had dropped after the AI support was taken away from them.

Why Is It Troublesome?As per Rachit Dubey, one of the co-authors of the study, it was found that this issue is merely about wrong answers. Rather, people may lose the habit of thinking deeply and may become less willing to solve problems on their own. He explained that over-reliance on AI tools could lead to impatience and a kind of dependency where thinking feels unnecessary or too much of an effort.
