Netflix’s
Stranger Things may be inching closer to its conclusion, but the universe it created is far from over. With Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2 finally dropping on the platform, fans across the world are buzzing with excitement. As anticipation builds for the third and final volume of the season, creators Matt and Ross Duffer have now dropped a major hint that has sent fans into a frenzy - a live-action Stranger Things spin-off is officially in the works.
Stranger Things spin-off is ON
In a recent conversation with
The Hollywood Reporter, Ross Duffer confirmed that the idea for a spin-off has been brewing for quite some time. However, he made it clear that the upcoming project will mark the end of the road for the beloved Hawkins characters and the Upside Down storyline.“We’re very early days on a live-action spinoff. But this is the end of the story for these characters of Hawkins, for the
Upside Down. It’s a different decade and different characters, but of course, still connected to the Stranger Things universe,” Ross shared. The Duffer Brothers said that while they won’t be showrunning the new series, they will remain closely involved in shaping it. “It’s an idea we’ve had for years and something we’re just really excited and passionate about. We won’t be showrunning that show, but we’ll be heavily involved,” Ross added, hinting that development will pick up pace in the new year. He also suggested that an official announcement could happen sooner than fans expect.
Spin-off to arrive BEFORE film
Naturally, questions arose about how this spin-off fits into the Duffer Brothers’ future plans, especially their upcoming deal with Paramount. Addressing this, Matt Duffer revealed that the spin-off could arrive even before their film projects take shape.“I think conceivably it could,” Matt said, with Ross adding, “We’re definitely further along with that idea than a movie idea!” Matt further explained that their Paramount deal hasn’t kicked in yet, allowing them to stay fully focused on expanding the
Stranger Things universe. “We’ve just been so focused on Stranger Things, and we’re still focused on the Stranger Things spinoff,” he noted. According to Matt, working on the new project has been creatively refreshing. “Even though it is Stranger Things, it’s really more of the style of storytelling. It’s very fun to start to develop a new mythology and new characters. It’s been a blast.”With the final chapter of
Stranger Things approaching and a brand-new era waiting in the wings, fans can rest assured that the magic of this universe is set to continue - just in a bold, unfamiliar, and exciting new direction.
