Rajpal Yadav recalls days in prison
During a recent appearance on Farah Khan’s podcast,
Rajpal Yadav got candid about his time in Tihar Jail back in 2018. The actor spoke about the phase in a composed and straightforward manner. When asked if he had any duties during his time in jail, Rajpal clarified that the situation never reached that point. However, he emphasised that discipline was a key part of daily life inside. “
Woh naubat nahi thi, lekin bahut discipline se rehna tha wahan pe aur proper time katna tha,” he said. He further added that the experience changed his outlook, saying he has learned to live in every condition.
Why Rajpal Yadav went to jail
In 2010, Rajpal took a loan of Rs 5 crore to finance his directorial debut,
Ata Pata Laapata. The film’s poor performance led to financial losses, and he was unable to repay the amount. This eventually resulted in a legal dispute. In 2018, a magistrate’s court convicted him in a cheque bounce case under the Negotiable Instruments Act and sentenced him to six months in jail. The verdict was upheld in 2019, with the total liability rising to nearly Rs 9 crore.Earlier this year, after failing to clear the dues, the actor surrendered and was sent to Tihar Jail. He was later granted interim bail on February 16 after depositing Rs 1.5 crore. He also sought a 30-day extension to arrange the remaining amount, but the request was rejected.
Support from Bollywood
Rajpal also spoke about the support he received during this period. He expressed gratitude towards those who stood by him and helped him financially. Actor Sonu Sood was among the first to come out in his support and urged filmmakers to sign Rajpal with a small signing amount so he could repay his debts. Afterwards, several others, including Salman Khan, David Dhawan and Priyadarshan, also reportedly stepped in to help.
