Priyanka
Chopra is all set to be seen in SS Rajamouli's Varanasi, co-starring Mahesh Babu. While the preparations for the film's release are ongoing, a report claimed that the actress will be seen in a cameo role in the film, Amri. It is based on the life of the pioneering Hungarian-Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil. While not much has been revealed, the report mentioned that Priyanka has already shot her portions for the film. But who is Amrita Sher-Gil? Know everything about the Hungarian-Indian painter, who is recognised as the mother of modern Indian art.
Who is painter Amrita Sher-Gil?
Amrita Sher-Gil (1913–1941) was a trailblazing Hungarian-Indian artist hailed as a pioneer of modern Indian art. Combining Western artistic methods with Indian subject matter, her emotional portraits, often compared to the 'India's Frida Kahlo', touchingly depict the lives of India's marginalized communities. Born in Budapest to a Sikh aristocrat and a Hungarian singer, she moved to India in 1921 and combined European institutional training with a deep desire to portray Indian reality.
She was the youngest artist and the only Asian to win a gold medal at the Paris Salon (1933). Her style evolved from Western realism to a more restrained and Indian style influenced by the cave paintings of Ajanta. Her artwork depicts women's lives, the rural poor, and her own identity, often filled with sadness and intense emotion. In 1976, the Indian government declared its artworks as national industrial treasures, making it illegal to export them. Amrita is considered one of the most important figures in 20th-century Indian art, leaving behind only 172 documented paintings. Meanwhile, she passed away at the young age of 28 in 1941, under mysterious circumstances, as per reports.
