Kara is seeing a steady slowdown at the box office as Suriya's new film Karuppu has hit theatres on May 15. On Day 16, the film earned Rs 16 lakh net in India, taking its total domestic collection to Rs 36.96 crore. The heist thriller, which opened to mixed reviews, had shown slightly better earnings till Karuppu released, but has now entered a decline. In contrast, Suriya and Trisha Krishnan’s Karuppu has opened to a strong response, resulting in impressive numbers on its first day across India and overseas markets.
Kara Slows Down After Karuppu's Arrival
Dhanush’s Kara is currently experiencing a noticeable slowdown at the box office as fresh competition continues to pull audiences towards new Tamil film release Karuppu. On its sixteenth day, the film managed to collect Rs 16 lakh net in India, which comes to around Rs 18 lakh gross. It was screened across 339 shows and recorded an overall occupancy of 20.0 percent, showing a clear dip in theatrical earnings. Kara continues to rely heavily on Tamil Nadu, which remains its strongest market by a wide margin with Rs 29.57 crore in gross collections. The total collection stands Rs 41.58 crore.
The film features several National Award-winning actors and a Padma Shri recipient, including Jayaram, MS Bhaskar, Suraj Venjarammoodu which had raised expectations for a strong continuation of Dhanush’s post-pandemic success streak. Directed by Vignesh Raja, Kara is a heist thriller set in the early 1990s. Marking Dhanush’s 54th film as an actor, it has been co-written by Alfred Prakash.
Karuppu Opens with Strong Box Office Numbers
While Kara is losing steam, Karuppu has entered theatres with a strong opening that has immediately shifted box office attention. Starring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, the film collected Rs 14.40 crore net in India on Day 1 from 4,891 shows, with a strong reception collecting a gross of Rs 16.66 crore. The Tamil version alone contributed Rs 12 crore net.
Directed by RJ Balaji the film also registered an impressive overall occupancy of 54.0 percent across 3,448 shows on its opening day, showing strong audience interest from the start. Adding to its hype, Karuppu performed well in overseas markets as well, grossing Rs 4 crore internationally on Day 1. This pushed its worldwide gross collection to Rs 20.66 crore, giving the film a powerful global start. The film produced by Dream Warrior Pictures also stars Indrans and Natty Subramaniam.
