The filmmaker behind 300 and Zack Snyder’s Justice League has officially signed on to write and direct the cult classic reboot. Originally created by legendary director John Carpenter, the 1981 dystopian thriller became a fan favourite for its gritty atmosphere and iconic anti-hero Snake Plissken. Now, Snyder is reportedly aiming for a rawer, more practical approach to the new adaptation, stepping away from glossy superhero visuals in favour of grounded action and intense survival storytelling.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new Escape From New York film is currently being made and will soon be taken to studios and buyers, marking the first major step towards reviving the franchise in years. The project is reportedly intended for a theatrical release, with StudioCanal backing the reboot alongside producers Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman of The Picture Company.John Carpenter, who directed and co-wrote the original 1981 film, is attached as an executive producer. Zack Snyder will also produce through his Stone Quarry banner alongside Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller. While plot details for the reimagining are still under wraps, sources claim Snyder wants to create a “down and dirty” action thriller with a more grounded visual style, similar to his 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake.

Meanwhile, the original Escape From New York was set in a dystopian future where Manhattan had been transformed into a maximum-security prison. The story followed anti-hero Snake Plissken, played by Kurt Russell, as he was sent on a dangerous mission to rescue the President of the United States after a plane crash inside the city-prison.Hollywood has attempted to reboot the franchise multiple times over the years, with filmmakers including Robert Rodriguez, Leigh Whannell and Radio Silence previously linked to different versions. However, none of the projects moved forward. Snyder’s involvement now appears to have given the reboot fresh momentum.
