OpenAI, the ChatGPT maker, has launched a new Codex app for macOS, giving developers a dedicated space to work with AI-powered coding agents. Instead of relying on Codex through terminals or browser tabs, the new app brings everything into one place. OpenAI says the idea is to help developers manage complex coding tasks more easily, especially when multiple AI agents are working at the same time. The macOS app builds on Codex’s growing use since its debut earlier this year. What The Codex macOS App Actually DoesAccording to OpenAI, the Codex app is meant to function as a command centre for AI-assisted development. Instead of bouncing between terminals, IDEs and browser tabs, developers get a single dashboard showing what each agent is working on and how far
along it is. Projects are broken into clear threads, making it easier to spot stalled tasks, review progress, or jump in when something looks off. OpenAI claims this setup gives developers more oversight, not less, even as more work is pushed to AI.How Multi-Agent Coding Is HandledA major concern with agent-based coding is things going wrong when multiple bots touch the same code. OpenAI says it has addressed this by giving each agent its own isolated worktree. That means experiments, fixes or alternate approaches stay separate from the main repository. Developers can review changes calmly, comment on code differences, inspect edits line by line and decide what gets merged. Manual edits are still very much part of the flow, with files opening easily in a developer’s editor of choice.Built-In Tools And WorkflowsThe Codex macOS app also leans into workflows that OpenAI claims developers already rely on. It can turn Figma designs into production-ready UI code, assist with bug tracking and release workflows via tools like Linear and help deploy apps to popular cloud platforms. There are also hooks for generating images for mockups, checking OpenAI API documentation and working with common files like PDFs, spreadsheets and Word documents. Availability And Who Can Use ItThe Codex app for macOS is now available to users on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans, all accessible with the same ChatGPT login. OpenAI says Codex can be used across the web, CLI, IDE extensions and the new macOS app. For a limited time, even Free and Go users can try it. The AI giant has also temporarily increased rate limits for paid users, likely to encourage early adoption.
