Vijay’s
much-anticipated filmJana Nayagan, said to be his farewell movie before entering politics full-time, has cleared a crucial legal hurdle. The CBFC will now examine the film and decide on the certification.
Vijay Film Jana Nayagan: CBFC To Take Final Call on Certification Following Plea Withdrawal
On hearing the case, Justice PT Asha allowed the producers to withdraw their petition, leaving the CBFC to determine the final certification. With the court petition withdrawn, the revising committee of the CBFC will now examine the film and decide whether it will receive a U (unrestricted), UA (parental guidance), or A (adult) certificate.
A few weeks ago, the producers of Jana Nayagan approached the Madras High Court alleging delays in issuing the censor certificate despite complying with all suggested cuts. The controversy arose after the film was referred to a revising committee following a complaint alleging sensitive portrayal of the army and content hurting religious sentiments.
What Is Jana Nayagan CFBC Issue About?
The controversy around Jana Nayagan began when the producers submitted the film to the CBFC on December 18, 2025. The Examining Committee flagged certain scenes and asked for minor cuts, which the filmmakers implemented. On December 22, the committee recommended a UA certificate due to fight sequences, gory visuals, and brief references to religious sentiments. Despite complying with all edits, the film continued to be reviewed, and on January 5 it was referred to the Revising Committee, reportedly following a complaint about the portrayal of forces and religion. The producers filed a High Court petition on January 6 seeking immediate certification, citing release delays.
Earlier, a single-judge had ordered CBFC clearance, but a Division Bench stayed it. On January 27, 2026, the Bench set aside the single-judge order and remanded the matter, with the Supreme Court refusing to intervene.
When Is Jana Nayagan Going To Release?
Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is marketed as Vijay’s farewell film before his full-time political entry. The film stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Menon, Prakash Raj, and Priyamani alongside Vijay. The producers are reportedly targeting a February release, but the final date will likely be announced only after CBFC certification.
