CBFC Vs Jana Nayagan: Madras High Court Reserves Verdict On UA Certificate Appeal For Thalapathy Vijay Film

Nayagan was a special film for Thalapathy Vijay fans! The reason behind that was that fans were going to witness Vijay for the last time on the big screen. It was scheduled for a theatrical release on January 9, 2026, and was set for a box office clash with Sivakarthikeyan's Parasakthi. However, the film's release was halted due to certification issues. On January 20, the film's release date hearing was held in the Madras High Court. For the unversed, KVN Productions had approached the Madras High Court over delayed certification for Jana Nayagan from the Central Board of Film Certification. Know the latest development here.

Jana Nayagan release date hearing update

According to Live Law, A 3-hour long hearing was held today at Madras High Court. The bench of Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G Arul Murugan reserved the orders. The Madras HC reserved the verdict in an appeal preferred by by the CBFC against a single bench order directing it to grant U/A certificate to Vijay's Jana NayaganDuring the session, the Additional Solicitor General ARL Sundaresan, who appeared for CBFC, made two fold arguments. First, he mentioned that the board was not given to file the counter affidavit. And second, the communication, dated January 6, for review of film certification was not challenged by the producers.

On the other hand, senior advocate Satish Parasaran appeared for the producer argued that the CBFC chairman (after recommendation by examining committee) had communicated the decision to grant U/A certificate for the film and the same couldn't have been referred for review to the Revising Committee.

Sudha Kongara on Jana Nayagan CBFC row

Meanwhile, in an interview with India Today, Parasakthi director Sudha Kongara reacted to Vijay's Jana Nayagan CBFC controversy. She said, "What happened with Jana Nayagan - just two days before release, the censor board holds the film back - should not happen to any film. How do you compete with the biggest star in the country?
