Sivakarthikeyan The First Choice For LIK?
Director Vignesh Shivan revealed that his earlier collaboration with Sivakarthikeyan for Love Insurance Kompany (LIK) did not move forward due to differences in creative expectations. The film, initially set to be a high-budget futuristic film, underwent multiple discussions before it changed. According to the director, a producer requested changes to the story could not be accommodated, leading to the eventual shift in casting and planning. A key factor in the making of LIK was its futuristic setting, which initially raised concerns regarding budget. The production team reportedly suggested shifting the story to a present-day setting to manage costs.
However, Vignesh maintained that altering the core setting would compromise the film’s vision. Vignesh said that that he is a story-centric filmmaker who prioritises telling a story in his way, which played a key role in the decision. The filmmaker said that his approach to cinema involves extensive preparation, often spanning several years. In one interview he compared it to SS Rajamouli's Baabubali, “If someone asks you to make Baahubali in the present time, how can you do it?”
About LIK
Originally announced as Love Insurance Corporation, the film later underwent a title change due to copyright-related concerns. After discussions and legal considerations, it was renamed Love Insurance Kompany (LIK). In a YouTube interaction with Sudhir Srinivasan, Vignesh Shivan revealed that an insurance company made a steep financial demand over the film’s title rights. He stated that the firm reportedly asked for Rs 112 crore to retain the “LIC” title. “I don’t have Rs 112 crore,” the director remarked with a smile. He added that alternative titles such as LIP, LIT, LIK, and LIF were already being considered.
After discussions, the team selected LIK, while retaining the expanded title Love Insurance Kompany. The distinctive spelling of “Kompany” added a quirky touch, giving the film a unique identity. The director also noted that the title resonated well with audiences after release, proving that the last-minute change ultimately worked in the film’s favour.
