After
the death of filmmaker Garry Marshall, the third film in the Princess Diaries franchise had been shelved. But in 2024, the project was revived with director Adele Lim and Anne Hathaway returning as Princess Mia Thermopolis. Recently, Meg Cabot who penned the original book series, had a promising update to share with fans. The film is still happening; however, the makers need an opening in Hathaway's very busy schedule to find time to shoot. She has five releases in 2026. The author also spilled the beans that actor Chris Pine would be returning to the franchise.
Meg Cabot updates fans on Princess Diaries 3 movie
Speaking at BookCon 2026 in New York City, Cabot revealed that she had read the script and it was amazing! The author also let slip that actor Robert Schwartzman, who played Mia's first love interest Michael Moscovitz and Chris Pine, who played Nicholas Devereaux in the second film, would also be back with Hathaway.
Cabot said, "There is a part for everybody. There's a thing that happens that everybody has to show up." While Hathaway has confirmed she is returning for the sequel. Julie Andrews, who plays Mia's grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, has not yet been confirmed for the film. Actors Mandy Moore and Heather Matarazzo, who have been a part of the franchise, are expected to return. The reason the film hasn't begun filming yet is because of the lead actress' busy film schedule. Hathaway is currently on a press tour for her films,
Mother Mary and
The Devil Wears Prada 2. Cabot joked that eventually Hathaway would find time to go to the castle they have rented for the movie. She added that she can't wait to attend the premiere of the third film as she concluded, "I want to thank you all for being supportive of Genovia, a fictional country that I made up."
