Leena Gangopadhyay has stepped down from the post of Chairperson of the West Bengal State Commission for Women. Anandabazar.com reported that when they contact her, she said “I submitted my resignation two days ago" butshe is not aware whether her resignation has been formally accepted or not.She mentioned that she has not yet been officially informed by the commission but sources indicate that the formal announcement of her resignation may be made soon. For this purpose, a meeting has reportedly been called at the commission’s office. It is also known that one can hold this honorary position for a continuous period of nine years, after which they must step down. Leena had served as the Chairperson of the Women’s Commission for nine years, and her tenure was scheduled to end in July.
The portal also mentioned that the sudden death of Rahul has left her devastated and she did not pick up anyone’s calls just to compose herself.Meanwhile, rumors about Leena Gangopadhyay’s resignation had been circulating since April, following the untimely death of actor Rahul, which prompted debates in the film and television industry about workplace safety and accountability. During that time, some stakeholders also called for reforms in statutory bodies. Bengali actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee, aged 43, passed away on March 29, 2026, in a tragic accident while filming a television series at Talsari Beach near Digha, Odisha. Initial autopsy findings revealed that his lungs contained water and sand, confirming that he drowned after being struck by a wave during a shoot. Notably, he was working on a TV show produced by Leena Gangopadhyay's production company at the time of his death.
