Kumar’s fourth film as a director, has been titled 29 the film. The film is produced by Lokesh Kanagaraj and Karthik Subbaraj, a co-production which will bring together their banners G Squad Official and Stone Bench. The first glimpse features a voice over and where men aged 29, are asked who they are, and what sets them aside from their name and professional lives. Later, we see the Vidhu and Preeti Asrani seated next to each other in a bus, with composer Sean Donald's music setting in adding emotional flavour to the love story.

The visuals hint at an old-school love story set in the nineties, before the birth of apps like “Tinder, Bumble and Oyo”. Rathna Kumar shared this poster with the caption, “Stand At Ease Please,’ again hinting at romance.G Squad posted "He is one of the several people who come to Chennai in search of work and get a job. I am one of them...Name Satya, Age.. 29".Meanwhile, one has to note that Rathna Kumar made contributions to the dialogues in films, such as Master and Vikram.
29 the film also includes Master Mahendran, Avinash, Shenaz Fathima, Premkumar and others in supporting parts. Madhesh Manickam is the cinematographer. R S Sathish Kumar is the editor.With its blend of nostalgia, emotion and classic romance, 29 is expected to release in February or March, making it one of the early notable films to look forward to in the coming year.Meanwhile, Lokesh Kanagaraj is busy working on his next untitled project L7. He is also making his acting debut with the film DC. He recently helmed Rajinikanth's Film Coolie. Karthik Subbaraj's last direction was Suriya's Retro. Rathna Kumar’s first gained attention for his short film, titled Madhu, was included in Karthik Subbaraj’s anthology series, Bench Talkies (2015). He has directed films such as Gulu Gulu and Meyaadha Maan.
