Girija Oak Godbole on her parents’ divorce
Girija Oak Godbole’s father is a celebrated Marathi actor, Girish Oak. While speaking about his divorce with his mother, the actress said, “I come from a broken family. They separated when I was much younger. Mine wasn’t preventive therapy. It was more to seek a cure – as a result of a symptomatic problem I was going through. The first reaction was to go to a physician – my family doctor – to see what’s wrong with me. There was something wrong with me, only not physically. He directed me to a psychiatrist. During my first conversation with her, she told me to speak to a therapist. I was 17 when I first took therapy.” Girija also recalled how the dynamics changed in her family. She wished her parents too had accompanied her to those therapy sessions. It wasn’t a thing to deal with. While speaking about the impact, Girija Oak Godbole said, “When my family broke up, there was a lot of guilt on their part also. It was a choice between what they should do for themselves as individuals and what they should do for the whole unit. When that clashed, they were burdened with a lot of guilt. My parents chose themselves. I had so many questions. I wish I could take them both with me, and we could do this as a family because when you spend so much time with someone, that relationship is marked with a lot of baggage.”

Had she been a stranger, I perhaps could’ve opened up to her. Intermittently, as and when I feel the need to talk, I go to my therapist. It has been a long relationship and not with one therapist. I couldn’t go back to the same person, and so, I changed therapists over the years. But it has been an ongoing process for me.” Talking about Girija Oak Godbole, the actress has worked in several Marathi and Hindi films. She shared screen space with Aamir Khan in Taare Zameen Par.
