Heartstopper Forever: Olivia Colman Exits As THIS Actress Takes Over Role Of Sarah Nelson; Derek Jacobi To Make Cameo

Forever is going to look a little different when it releases later in 2026 on Netflix. The role of Sarah Nelson, Nick's mother, has been recast. Olivia Colman will not be returning for the film as Anna Maxwell Martin takes over the part. Additionally, creator and writer Alice Oseman announced that British veteran actor Derek Jacobi would make a cameo in the upcoming film. Starring Kit Connor as Nick and Joe Locke as Charlie, Heartstopper Forever concludes the romance between the two teenagers. The series was launched on April 22, 2022 and ran for three seasons.

Anna Maxwell Martin replaces Olivia Colman on Heartstopper Forever

It's official! Olivia Colman will not be coming back as Sarah Nelson. The actress last appeared in Season 2 of Heartstopper. She was not able to appear in Season 3 because of scheduling conflicts. The makers explained her absence by bringing on Sarah's sister Diane, played by Haley Atwell. However, for the final film, which will end the story of Heartstopper, Sarah's presence was necessary. Creator Oseman, who is adapting her webcomic, revealed why they had to recast the role instead of writing out Sarah again. The character is a supportive mother who is understanding about her son's sexuality when he comes out as bisexual in the Season 1 finale. Connor and Colman both won Children's and Family Emmy Awards for their performances.

Oseman told Tudum that when Olivia Colman was not able to join the team for the film, it felt nonsensical for Sarah to be absent from this final chapter, given some of the emotional struggles Nick faces. So they decided to recast the role. The writer shared that they were grateful for "Olivia's beautiful performance as Sarah." Colman is a fan favourite and fans were looking forward to her return. However, Oseman assured viewers that Martin "perfectly embodies Sarah’s gentle, down-to-earth energy" with her interpretation of the character. Additionally, Jacobi is joining the cast in a cameo role. He will likely play one part of the elderly gay couple who frequents the cafe where Charlie works.

Returning cast members for Heartstopper Forever

Despite the shock of Colman not returning, much of the cast is going to back for the final film. Besides Connor and Locke as the main couple, Yasmin Finney, Will Gao, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Tobie Donovan, Rhea Norwood, Jenny Walser, Fisayo Akinade, Nima Taleghani, Leila Khan, Bradley Riches, Darragh Hand and Eddie Marsan will all be back to reprise their roles.

While the screenplay of Heartstopper Forever is written by Oseman, Wash Westmoreland is taking over as director of the franchise. The lead actors Connor and Locke are now executive producers along with Oseman; Season 1 and 2 director Euros Lyn; Patrick Walters; Iain Canning; and Emile Sherman.
