Kumar's family is in mourning after the death of their matriarch, Mohini Mani, who passed away peacefully in her sleep at 89 today (May 30). After the news of her death broke earlier this morning. The newly appointed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Vijay, was one of the first to share his condolences with Ajith and his family. Ajith, however, was in Dubai at the time of his mother's death but he flew back to Chennai immediately. He was spotted arriving at Chennai International Airport. A few hours later, CM Vijay, along with Trisha Krishnan, met the superstar at his residence to pay their respects in person.
Ajith returns home to Chennai for mother's last rites
Several videos of Ajith arriving in India at the Chennai International Airport were shared online. The actor and professional racer, who was seen with minimal luggage, was whisked away to a waiting car. Earlier in the day, his brother Anil Kumar shared a statement on social media announcing her death. He confirmed that she had died in her sleep, after a period of declining health. Anil also shared anecdotes from their mother's life, especially about her coming to India after Partition. He wrote, "We are comforted, even in this time of grief, that she lived a long life and could be counted among the lucky ones."
The family also shared that they were moved by the kind, heartfelt messages, condolences, and remembrances from everyone. However, Mohini Mani's last rites will be a private, family affair and take place on Sunday morning, May 31, in Chennai. She is survived by her sons, Ajith, Anil, and Anup Kumar. The notorious private actor has a charitable organisation named after her called the Mohini Mani Foundation.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay visits Ajith's home
After Ajith's arrival in Chennai, Vijay made his way to his home to pay his last respects to the grieving family. The two big stars of Tamil cinema have previously worked together in Janaki Soundar's 1995 film
Rajavin Parvaiyile. Of course, now Vijay has retired from films; his last film,
Jana Nayagan, is yet to be released.
However, that didn't support the former rival from making a personal trip to Ajith's home to share his support and pay respects. Trisha accompanied Vijay to meet Ajith at his residence. The two actors embraced and Ajith also spoke and embraced Trisha who was wearing a black outfit.
Veteran actor Kamal Haasan as well as political leaders MK Stalin, Edappadi K Palanisamy, and Seeman took to social media to pay their respects towards Ajith Kumar and his family. Ajith's father P. Subramaniam died in 2023 at the age of 85.
