The Golden Globe Awards have officially introduced new rules addressing the use of artificial intelligence in films and television projects. Ahead of its 84th ceremony, the updated guidelines signal that AI-generated tools and generative AI technologies will not automatically disqualify submissions, as long as human creators remain the primary artistic force behind the work. The comprehensive new eligibility rules were unveiled and would be in effect from the next Globes, which is scheduled for January 10, 2027. These new guidelines come just days after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rolled back the red carpet for AI. This decision now blocks Oscar nominations for AI actors and writers, and it might be considered a natural follow-up
to the two Hollywood strikes of 2023.On May 7, the Golden Globes organisation followed the Academy's lead and addressed the rapid integration of artificial intelligence into cinema, emphasising that while technology is welcome, human artistry remains the gatekeeper of the "Globe."
Golden Globes' new eligibility rules
Under the newly announced regulations, projects using AI (artificial intelligence) can still compete for awards if the core creative vision, decision-making, and authorship are led by credited individuals rather than automated systems. The organisation emphasised that AI may support or enhance production, but it cannot replace the essential contributions of human talent in areas such as directing, writing, composing, acting, or animation. The rules also make disclosure mandatory. Any film or television project submitted for consideration must clearly state where generative AI was used during production. This includes instances where AI tools altered a performer’s voice, likeness, or appearance. Organisers stressed that transparency would play a major role in determining eligibility as the entertainment industry increasingly adopts emerging technology.
How can actors qualify and compete?
Performance categories will face especially strict scrutiny. According to the updated guidelines, actors can only qualify for acting awards if their performances are primarily their own work. AI-assisted enhancements will be permitted only when the performer maintains creative control and has authorised the technology's use. However, performances substantially generated by AI, or created using unauthorized digital replicas, voice cloning, or biometric data, will not be eligible.
Hollywood's attack on AI
The new policy reflects Hollywood's continuing effort to balance technological innovation with artistic integrity. Artificial intelligence became one of the most debated issues during the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes led by the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA, where concerns over digital likeness rights, automated script generation, and job security dominated negotiations.
What happens with smaller non-English titles?
Beyond AI, the Golden Globes also announced important updates regarding international and independent cinema. Non-English language productions and smaller independent films with budgets under $10 million will now be allowed to submit performers directly for acting categories, even if the films themselves are not entered into Best Motion Picture races. The change is expected to give greater visibility to global performers and smaller productions that may not have the marketing reach of major studio films.
Submission process
The organisation also revealed that its submissions portal will open on June 1, significantly earlier than in previous years, as part of preparations for the 2027 awards season. Nominations are scheduled to be announced on December 7, before the winners are revealed at the January ceremony. The updated regulations arrive during a period of rapid transformation across the entertainment industry, where studios, filmmakers, and performers are increasingly experimenting with AI-driven production tools. By permitting AI-assisted projects while insisting on human creative leadership, the Golden Globes appear to be attempting a middle-ground approach - embracing technological evolution without diminishing the role of artists. The ceremony will once again be hosted by Nikki Glaser, marking her third consecutive year leading the event.
