James Cameron has directed several successful projects in his career. Currently, he is awaiting the release of his upcoming movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash. In a recent interview, James revealed that even
before generative AI was invented, Hollywood insiders assumed that he used computer graphics to replace actors while making the first Avatar film. However, the director himself finds it horrifying that generative AI can replace actors.
James Cameron on generative AI
In an interview with
CBS' Sunday Morning, James shared, "For years, there was this sense that, ‘Oh, they’re doing something strange with computers and they’re replacing actors,’ when in fact, once you really drill down and you see what we’re doing, it’s a celebration of the actor-director moment."The filmmaker further mentioned that generative AI is invading the industry with the idea that technology can substitute for actors. "Now, go to the other end of the spectrum, and you’ve got generative AI, where they can make up a character. They can make up an actor. They can make up a performance from scratch with a text prompt. It’s like, no. That’s horrifying to me. That’s the opposite. That’s exactly what we’re not doing," he added.
