actress Lisa Kudrow, in a recent interview, talked about how new sitcoms nowadays are 'too afraid' to make jokes that make audiences 'uncomfortable,' unlike FRIENDS. She has also made things clear concerning her character of Phoebe Buffay in the iconic show, revealing that her character from the hit sitcom 'wasn’t stupid', reports People magazine.

She spoke with actress Lily Tomlin for Interview Magazine's chat and she said, "I’m not drawn to new sitcoms that are multi-camera in front of an audience because I’m not buying it." She doesn’t know if that’s just because she has seen too many single-camera sitcoms, but she thinks the industry needs to get back to being able to tell jokes, as everyone has been 'too afraid' to make jokes that might make people uncomfortable.
Further, she added, "Comedy is about surprise. You need things you didn’t see coming." Kudrow starred as the free-spirited Phoebe Buffay in all 10 seasons of
Friends, arguably the most iconic multi-camera sitcom of all time. Her leading castmates were Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Matthew Perry, Courteney Cox and Matt LeBlanc. Talking about her character, Kudrow shared, "At the time, it was like, 'She’s such a ditz. How is it that you only play ditzes?' And I thought, Is she a ditz? To me, she wasn’t."

When asked who called Phoebe a ditz, she replied, “Everybody. In 1994, it was like, ‘I love her. She’s such a ditz’.” She emphasised, however, that her character 'wasn’t stupid.' As per People, the actress said it took some time for her to personally connect with her character, but it eventually happened over the show’s lengthy run.The iconic sitcom about six friends living in New York City aired from 1994 to 2004. It also starred Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc and the late Matthew Perry. Phoebe was a musician who juggled a variety of jobs throughout the series.
In an earlier interview, Lisa had shared that she had just reached the series eight finale, where Rachel and Ross welcome their daughter, Emma, into the world.
Friends ran from 1994 until 2004, with 236 episodes made, and Lisa is proud to have been a part of the show. Lisa won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of the quirky character.
