NASA confirmed on Friday that its Artemis II mission is currently halfway through its voyage to the Moon, marking a significant milestone in the agency’s efforts to return humans to deep space. In an official post on X, NASA tweeted, “We’re halfway there,” and announced that the Orion spacecraft carrying four astronauts is progressing as planned towards the lunar orbit. After a successful translunar injection burn on April 2, the Artemis II astronauts settled into their rhythm of deep-space operations. Following the completion of the burn, the crew became the first to complete this milestone since the Apollo mission in 1972.Artemis II Crew To Conduct Lunar FlyBy NextAfter finishing the Day 2 plan, the crew will conduct the lunar flyby next.
NASA informed, “We’re halfway there. At the time of posting this, the Artemis II mission is about halfway to the Moon. When the astronauts arrive, they will conduct a lunar flyby and collect scientific observations of the Moon’s surface.”
Artemis II Mission Day 3 ScheduleThe crew will gear up to carry out its outbound trajectory correction (OTC) burn on Diday at 6:49 PM EDT, stated NASA. Further, the brief firing will last for about eight seconds and make minimal adjustments to the Orion’s direction and speed. This will help the spacecraft to get on the right path as it travels towards the Moon. Meanwhile, the control unit on Earth is preparing for the lunar flyby on April 6. The team is identifying key surface features that the crew will be able to observe. During a six-hour observation window, the correct alignment of the Moon, Sun, and the Orion spacecraft will help the astronauts to witness nearly 20% of the Moon’s far side. The crew will further practice setting up for these observations inside the spacecraft. This comprises preparing cameras and rehearsing how to move in microgravity within the compact cabin. Moreover, the astronauts will configure special lenses to capture detailed images during the flyby.
