Alert! Euphoria Season 3 is back after a long hiatus, and viewers are reacquainted with the world of Sam Levinson in a story set many years after high school. The new season explores how Cassie and Nate’s lives unfold, including a dramatic wedding arc that anchors Episode 3. Maintaining its tradition of emotional storytelling, the show highlights the real-life situations surrounding its cast, and one of them is Eric Dane, whose portrayal of Cal is reimagined in light of his ALS diagnosis, and the narrative incorporates his speech changes into the character’s decline.
Euphoria Season 3 honours Eric Dane
Euphoria Season 3, which revolves around Cassie and Nate’s wedding, becomes a key emotional turning point in the season. The event acts more like a stressful situation than a celebration, pushing multiple characters' pasts into the same limited space. In this context, the return of Cal Jacobs adds a particularly poignant dimension to the narrative, as the character's demise reflects the larger theme. A major point of discussion has been the return of Eric Dane as Cal following his ALS diagnosis. Rather than ignoring the physical realities of his condition, the show integrates them with the character's current state, and uses Cal's drinking and mental decline as a narrative explanation for his changing speech and behaviour. This allows Dane’s performance to remain present and impactful without attempting to erase his health struggles. Moreover, his scenes, especially with Jules, played by Hunter Schafer, are restrained but emotional.
The episode opens with an emotional tribute, featuring a black screen and a still image of the actor along with the message, “In remembrance of Eric Dane 1972 — 2026.” This restrained opening immediately sets a thoughtful mood. The behind-the-scenes information suggests a concerted effort to support Dane while keeping his creative contributions intact. The season premiere’s dedication to both Dane and Angus Cloud underscores the emotional reality surrounding the show’s production, reminding viewers that the boundaries between fiction and real-life loss are often thin.
