All scripts must be written by people, and the acting must be done by people with their consent. Following the rule changes, Indian filmmakers, including poet-lyricist Gulzar, screenwriter Javed Akhtar, and filmmaker Zoya Akhtar, have shared their thoughts. They supported and also praised the emphasis on human emotion and creativity in cinema and requested similar protections against AI-driven content in India’s film industry. Meanwhile, this new rule aims to embrace a more globalised film world while preserving human creativity.
What did Gulzar, Javed, Zoya Akhtar say about Oscars 2027 new rules?
Legendary Indian poet and lyricist Gulzar spoke to Hindustan Times about the new rules of Oscars 2027. He shared that human emotion is universal and that is what great cinema represents and added that in the past they have had some wonderful films from India that missed out on an Academy Award but highlighting human beings and the emotions they represent is the right thing to do. "I would like to see stories like that of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mere Pyare Prime Minister and Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapaak, represent India at the Academy Awards," shared Gulzar. Notably, Gulzar won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2009 for the Slumdog Millionaire song Jai Ho.

Javed Akhtar shared that the decision is "understandable," and questioned, "In the Olympics humans don’t race against racing cars . negative effects of AI. She emphasized that not only writing, but also songwriting and music composition should be protected from AI.

Meanwhile, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is set to take effect on March 14, 2027, and for India, it will stream early Monday morning, March 15. It will take place at Dolby Theatre, Hollywood. The updated category now also allows non-English films to qualify by securing top honours at prestigious international festivals like Cannes, Berlin, and Venice. Additionally, countries can submit multiple entries, and the award will be attributed to the film and its director, rather than the country or region.
