Malhotra's Ramayana finally got its much-awaited first look on the auspicious occasion of Hanuman Jayanti on April 2. The first look of the film which will see Ranbir Kapoor essay the role of Lord Rama, alongside Toxic star Yash as Ravana, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman has however, met with mixed reactions, with many calling it out for the use of AI - erroneously at that as well. The film, being touted to be India's answer to Lord of the Rings and having a budget of Rs 4000 crore is being slammed on social media especially for one teaser scene, which netizens are calling out.
There is a scene in the teaser where Lord Rama (Ranbir Kapoor) can be seen walking amidst his subjects who are paying their obeisance to him, while showering him with flowers. Eagle-eyed fans have however, spotted a discrepancy in the teaser. On looking closer, one can see a youngster bowing down in the crowd, but not at Lord Rama, but rather at the camera. Surprisingly, as Ram keeps on moving, the same youngster can be seen throwing flowers at Maryada Purushottam Rama. To make things murkier, the two guys beside him can be seen constantly showering
Lord Rama with flowers in both instances, only the turban of one changes colour –
editorial oversight or misuse of AI? Netizens seem to think so.One user shared the short clip from the teaser on social media and wrote, "Kid bows to Ranbir Kapoor while he walks past him then the same kid comes in the next frame to shower him with flowers 😂 #grok can make better AI videos than this." In fact the person even compared the teaser to Aditya Dhar's Dhurandhar with Ranveer Singh in the lead, writing, "After #Dhurandhar everything bollywood makes will only look like a cartoon. #Ramayana the movie deserved better!"
A second person shared the same video and wrote, "First frame: kid is bowing down and ranbir crossed him Next frame: same kid is showering flowers on him. And we're competing with Hollywood with these AI videos in big 2026 🤡🙏 #Ramayana"Commenting on the clip, another person humorously tweeted, "Sloppy. How difficult it is to get extras? Galgotia students will line up just for attendance," while a fourth person pointed out, "it's AI 100%, notice the color of turban of the man behind that child, it slowly changes from purple to green lol".
Fans have also been slamming the VFX of the film, with one person writing, "The creature shots literally look like PS4 cut scenes lmaooo and namit malhotra had the audacity to say it's on par with avatar. How can they expect this to "amaze" a global audience when a B-tier Hollywood film has the same VFX #Ramayana"
Ramayana marks the second big-budget cinematic adaptation of Valmiki’s epic in India in the last 10 years, following Om Raut’s 2023 Adipurush, starring Prabhas and Kriti Sanon in lead roles. The film, however, was massively criticised and underperformed at the box office. The upcoming two-part saga is slated for a festive release, with Ramayana: Part One arriving in theatres in
October 2026 ahead of Diwali, while Part Two is scheduled to follow in October 2027.
