Idiots (2009) is a hugely popular, record-breaking Indian comedy-drama that takes a sharp, humorous look at the intense pressure of the education system. The film concludes with Farhan (R. Madhavan) and Raju (Sharman Joshi) discovering that their enigmatic friend Rancho (Aamir Khan) is actually Phunsukh Wangdu, a celebrated scientist living in Ladakh, where he is reunited with his love, Pia (Kareena Kapoor Khan). But fans couldn't get enough of their story and have been demanding a sequel since then. While reports of 3 Idiots sequel often keep resurfacing, Aamir recently confirmed that 3 Idiots 2 will follow the story of Rancho, Farhan, and Raju after 10 years.
Aamir Khan on 3 Idiots 2
Speaking to Amar Ujala, Aamir Khan said that Rajkumar Hirani is working on 3 Idiots 2. Revealing that he has heard the script, he called it "really good." "There’s still more work to be done on it, but it has turned into a very beautiful story. The humor is just as strong, and it’s quite an unusual story. It follows the same characters you saw in
3 Idiots, but set 10 years later," Aamir said. He said that it was this film he planned to do in the coming days. He added that it was a beautiful story and that he believed Abhijat Joshi (screenwriter) and Rajkumar Hirani had written and conceived it very well. He also mentioned that he was waiting to work on it and that, once again, he would have to step into the character of Phunsukh Wangdu.
About 3 Idiots
3 Idiots (2009) is a Hindi-language satirical comedy-drama directed by Rajkumar Hirani, co-written by Abhijat Joshi, and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Inspired by Chetan Bhagat’s novel
Five Point Someone, the film examines the shortcomings of the Indian education system with humor and insight. The film centers on three engineering students, Rancho, a gifted but unconventional thinker; Farhan, who secretly dreams of becoming a wildlife photographer; and Raju, who is burdened by financial struggles and family expectations—studying at the highly competitive Imperial College of Engineering (ICE). Rancho questions the institution's rigid, rote-based system and the authoritarian teaching style of its director, Virus (Boman Irani), and instead advocates for understanding and authentic learning. During his time at college, he also falls in love with Virus’s daughter, Pia (Kareena).
Several years after graduating, Farhan and Raju set out on a journey to find their missing friend Rancho, who had disappeared shortly after graduating from college. Their search eventually leads them to Ladakh, where they uncover the truth about his true identity and the exceptional school he built. At the last moment, they learn that Rancho is actually Phunsukh Wangdu, a highly respected explorer and innovator.
