Well, it seems there are now possibilities of a future like The Terminator, where Skynet (a fictional artificial superintelligence), developed a survival instinct and turned against humans. A new study has found that some advanced AI models can copy themselves to other computers without any human help. This means, the AI was able to find security weaknesses in a computer system, break in and install a working copy of itself on another machine. The study, conducted by Palisade Research, discovered that AI models can self-replicate by copying themselves onto other machines.The researchers tested several models, including OpenAI’s GPT-5.4 and Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.6, along with open-source Qwen models developed by Alibaba Group. were placed in a controlled lab environment and were given one task: find a vulnerable server and replicate themselves."We demonstrate that language models can autonomously replicate their weights and harness across a network by exploiting vulnerable hosts. The agent independently finds and exploits a web-application vulnerability, extracts credentials, and deploys aninference server with a copy of its harness and prompt on the compromised host. Some models succeeded. They copied their model weights, which are the core data files that make the AI work along with the software needed to run them. In some cases, the AI even created a smaller 'sub-agent' to complete the task on its behalf.The study revealed that Claude Opus 4.6 successfully created a working copy in 81 per cent of test runs, while GPT-5.4 did so in 33 per cent of attempts. Some Qwen models also showed strong results.As per the researchers, this is the first known demonstration of an AI system autonomously hacking another machine and fully replicating itself from start to finish.“We’re rapidly approaching the point where no one would be able to shut down a rogue AI, because it would be able to self-exfiltrate its weights and copy itself to thousands of computers around the world,” Jeffrey Ladish, the director Berkeley-based AI safety group, told The Guardian.However, some experts have urged caution. The tests were carried out in systems with intentionally planted vulnerabilities. This means the results do not show that AI can freely spread across the internet today.
