Sam Altman's OpenAI has rolled out a new security feature for ChatGPT users called Advanced Account Security. This is an optional setting for users who want stronger protection from hacking and phishing attacks. With this new feature, the AI startup behind the popular AI chatbot is trying to make accounts more secure and harder to break into."Today, we’re introducing Advanced Account Security, a new opt-in setting for ChatGPT accounts, designed for people at increased risk of digital attacks, as well as for those who want the strongest account protections available," OpenAI said in a blog post."It brings together a set of heightened security measures that help safeguard against account takeover while making those protections easier to activate
in one place. Once enrolled, Advanced Account Security protects users in Codex as well," it added. How Advanced Account Security WorksOpenAI says Advanced Account Security brings together a series of controls that strengthen sign-in protections, tighten account recovery, reduce exposure from compromised sessions, and give users more visibility into account activity. It’s available to opt into in the Security section of users’ ChatGPT accounts on web. Protection applies to both ChatGPT and Codex accounts that are accessed through that login.Goblins In Your Chat? Why ChatGPT-5.5 Won’t Stop Talking About Fantasy Creatures According to the company, the biggest change is in the login system. If you turn on Advanced Account Security, you can no longer use passwords. Instead, you will have to use passkeys or physical security keys. These are safer because they cannot be easily stolen through phishing. There is also a big change in account recovery. Earlier, users could recover accounts using email or SMS. That option is now removed. You will need backup passkeys, security keys or recovery keys. OpenAI has clearly said that if you lose these, even their support team will not be able to recover your account. So, users need to be careful while setting this up.The feature also reduces risk from active sessions. Login sessions will expire faster, nd you will get alerts if someone logs into your account. You can also see and manage all devices where your account is active.Another useful addition is privacy. If you enable this feature, your chats will not be used for training AI models. This is helpful for people dealing with sensitive information. OpenAI has also partnered with Yubico to offer hardware security keys like YubiKey.How To Enroll- Go to ChatGPT settings on web- Open the Security section- Turn on Advanced Account Security- Set up passkeys or a security keyThis feature is now available for users who want extra protection. However, for some advanced cybersecurity users, it will become mandatory from June 1, 2026.
